A quick read before your first post

The essentials.

01

Contribute before you promote.

Bring a useful answer, a real question, or something others can learn from. Sales pitches belong only in the channels that explicitly allow them.

02

Choose the right channel.

Read the channel description and pinned rules first. Post once, then keep the discussion in its thread.

03

Keep people safe.

Be respectful. Do not harass, discriminate, expose private information, or send unsolicited pitches by direct message.

04

Ask when you are unsure.

Mike Cubberly and the moderator team can help you find the right place, clarify a rule, or report a problem.

The practical test

Does this help members, fit the channel, and follow its rules for promotion, links, and access?

03

Your first five minutes

Make yourself at home.

You do not need a polished personal brand or a perfect answer to belong here. Show up as yourself, find the conversations that matter to you, and help where you can.

  1. Complete your profile.

Use your real name, role, company, and a clear photo so people know who they are talking to.

  2. Introduce yourself without a pitch.

Start in #intros. A useful introduction shares what you do, what you are learning, and the people or ideas you would like to connect with.

  3. Join channels that fit your work.

Browse Slack’s channel directory, read each description, and check the pinned rules. Follow relevant conversations before starting a new one.

  4. Keep the conversation together.

Reply in the original thread without selecting “also reply in channel.” Add enough context for someone to help you. Choose one channel for a post.

  5. Meet people and get involved.

Use Trova’s Directory to discover members, join a community event, and follow the official new-member onboarding journey for Jared’s welcome and the onboarding call.

Suggested introduction

“Hi, I’m [name]. I work on [role or area] at [company]. I’m here to learn about [topic], and I can help with [experience]. Outside work, I’m into [interest].”

04

Channel directory

Find the right room.

Choose the channel that matches your intent. A post that works in one channel may be removed from another.

#chat-watercoolerCasual, community-oriented conversation.Keep it respectful. This is still a community space, not a sales channel.
One post, one place.

Do not copy the same request across channels. If you chose the wrong place, ask a moderator how to move it.

06

Advice, feedback, and research

Ask a real question.

#chat-help is for getting unstuck. Give people something specific they can answer.

Good starting points

  • “Here is the message I am using. Which part is unclear?”
  • “We need to replace this tool. Our constraints are X and Y. What has worked for you?”
  • “I am hiring our next role. How would you decide between these two options?”
  • “What problems have you seen with this process? I would like to compare experiences.”

Keep it out of Help

  • A product launch announcement dressed up as a question.
  • A pitch for your startup, services, or free audit.
  • The same request you already posted elsewhere.
  • A request whose real purpose is collecting leads.
Let the answers benefit the community.

Keep useful answers in the thread instead of steering everyone into DMs. Surveys for feedback are welcome. Keep the purpose clear and do not disguise lead generation as community research. Ask a moderator if you are unsure whether a request fits.

Startup pitches in Help are subject to immediate deletion without a warning.

07

Promotion and company offers

There is a place for your pitch.

Use #chat-startup-pitches when your goal is to promote a company, product, service, or offer.

  1. One post about a company per week.

The limit applies to the company, not a separate allowance for every team member.

  2. Keep it brief.

Explain the offer clearly and leave room for others. Excessively long posts may be deleted at moderator discretion.

  3. Keep it legitimate.

No backlink posts, pyramid schemes, or illegal or unethical offers.

  4. Keep promotion in its designated place.

A pitch permitted here is not permission to copy it into other channels or send it privately to members.

Spam affects membership.

Spam can result in removal from RevGenius, not just deletion of a post. Ask Mike if you are unsure whether your offer fits.

08

Hiring and compensation

Make the opportunity clear.

FULL-TIME

Use the submission form.

All full-time job posts go through the official form. Submit each opening separately and include its compensation. The submission is formatted for #chat-job-postings. Direct channel posts are automatically deleted.

Submit a full-time job ↗

Compensation must be in the Slack post.

For part-time and contract roles, include the compensation rate or range even if it already appears on the application page. Give candidates enough information to assess the opportunity. If compensation is not confirmed, wait to post. If a moderator requests removal, take the post down and repost once you can include a specific rate or range.

Required structure for a contract or fractional role

Company
Company name and a one-sentence description.
Role
Job title and key requirements.
Compensation
Rate or range, with the currency and payment basis made clear.
Commission needs real context.

A percentage alone is not enough. Include typical actual deal or revenue sizes and the corresponding dollar commission range. A hypothetical large deal does not tell a candidate what people typically earn.

09

Looking for your next role

Let hiring teams find you.

Use the job-seeker form to share your availability in #chat-job-seekers.

  1. Submit through the form.

Your information is formatted and posted through the community’s workflow. Do not publish your own separate job-seeking post directly in the channel.

  2. Keep job-seeking out of the hiring channels.

The part-time jobs channel is for opportunities offered by companies, not requests for work.

  3. Make your experience easy to understand.

Be specific about the work you can do and the kind of role you are seeking. Complete the form’s requested fields accurately.

Submit your job-seeker profile ↗
Use the form even if the channel is correct.

Posting in the right channel does not replace the required submission process. Unformatted direct posts are automatically deleted.

10

Events and smaller communities

Bring people together.

Share a free event.

#chat-member-events is for free events. Tell members what the event is about and how to join. Andrew Swisher moderates the events channel. You can also add it to the RevGenius community calendar.

For something that falls outside the channel’s free-event rule, check with a moderator before posting.

Find your community within the community.

#chat-revwomen is a women-only channel. Only women may join or participate. It supports women across sales, marketing, customer success, RevOps, and other revenue roles. Alex Padilla and Paris Picard co-moderate the space.

Use relevant location and specialist channels to meet people with shared interests. Read their descriptions and ask the channel moderator about access or fit.

11

LinkedIn content

Share the idea behind the link.

#rg-linkedin-creators exists for original, thought-provoking content and meaningful engagement.

  1. One post per week.

Respect the channel’s posting limit so other creators have room to participate.

  2. Explain why the content is useful.

Include context about the idea and its author. A bare link gives members little reason to engage.

  3. Use the joining-announcement channel for your introduction to RevGenius.

#revgenius-member-linkedin-announcements is the place to share a LinkedIn post announcing that you joined the community.

  4. Do not spread social links through unrelated channels.

In particular, GTM Engineering explicitly prohibits LinkedIn and other social-media links.

12

Conduct and direct messages

Be someone people can trust.

Treat members with respect in channels, threads, direct messages, and community interactions. A disagreement is not permission to attack a person.

Respect people and their information.

  • No harassment, threats, discrimination, intimidation, or abusive behavior.
  • No sexually explicit or otherwise inappropriate material.
  • Do not disclose private member information without permission.
  • Be constructive when you disagree. Do not insult or demean people.
  • Keep inflammatory political or religious arguments and named public call-outs out of the community.

A shared workspace is not consent to a pitch.

  • Do not send unsolicited sales offers or spam by DM. Cold sales messages can result in immediate removal without a warning.
  • Do not treat the member directory as a prospect list.
  • DMs should follow an obvious prior conversation or an explicit invitation. That is not permission for unrelated sales follow-up.
  • If someone does not want contact, respect that boundary.
Received an unwanted pitch or something concerning?

Send a moderator the message link or screenshot privately. Do not turn it into a public pile-on or repost someone’s private information.

13

Reporting and moderation

Clear rules. Human judgment.

Mike Cubberly leads community standards, supported by the community leads and channel moderators. The aim is to keep the space useful and safe while helping people understand what is expected.

01

We may redirect or request a correction.

A moderator may point you to the right channel or ask you to add missing information, such as compensation on a job post.

02

Posts can be removed.

Some rules are enforced automatically. Direct full-time job posts, direct job-seeker posts, and pitches in Help do not carry a promise of a warning before deletion.

03

Membership can be removed.

Spam, scams, harassment, repeated violations, and other inappropriate conduct can lead to removal. Serious conduct does not require a sequence of warnings.

Report a concern privately.

Contact Mike or a moderator. Include the channel, the message link or screenshot, and a short factual explanation. Share only what is needed to review the issue. Tagging a moderator inside a private DM does not give them access; send the evidence directly.

Disagree with a decision?

Contact Mike or a community lead privately with the original post and the rule you want clarified. Ask for context or review. Do not repost removed content or repeat the same argument across channels.

Moderators can consider context.

An exception for one post is not blanket permission for other members, companies, or channels. A post remaining visible is not proof that it has been approved.

15

Quick answers

The questions that come up.

Can I share a tool I built?

Yes, in the appropriate place and within its rules. A promotional launch belongs in Startup Pitches. Open-source repositories and direct resources are welcome in GTM Engineering when they do not collect leads. Ask a moderator if it does not clearly fit.

Can I answer a question by mentioning my company or product?

Answer the actual question with useful context. Do not turn a helpful reply into an unsolicited pitch, an affiliate push, or a lead-capture request. A relevant answer is different from broadcasting an offer; channel-specific restrictions still apply.

Can I post the same thing in two channels?

No. Choose the best channel. If you are unsure, ask for direction before posting.

Can someone else at my company post another pitch this week?

The Startup Pitches limit is one post about a company per week. It is not one post for each employee.

Can I post a commission-only role?

Use the appropriate contract or fractional jobs channel and make the compensation understandable. Include typical actual deal or revenue sizes and the corresponding dollar commission range. A commission percentage by itself is insufficient.

Why was my job post deleted when it was in the right channel?

Full-time jobs and job-seeker profiles must use the linked submission forms. Direct posts are automatically deleted. For part-time or contract jobs, check the compensation, description, and role-type requirements.

Who can join RevWomen?

RevWomen is a women-only channel. Only women may join or participate.

Can I share a paid event?

The member-events channel is for free events. Ask a moderator before sharing anything outside that rule.

Can I run a survey or ask for research participants?

Surveys and specific feedback questions can fit in Help. Keep learning in the Slack thread where possible, make the purpose clear, and avoid disguised promotion. Ask a moderator if you are unsure.

Will I always receive a warning first?

No. Some channel violations trigger immediate or automatic deletion, and serious or repeated misconduct can lead to membership removal.

What if the old guide and a channel reminder say different things?

Use the current channel-specific instructions for that channel. If the sources are unclear or conflict, ask Mike or a moderator before posting.

Does a visible post mean that its format is allowed?

No. Visibility is not approval. Use the written rules and current moderator guidance.

Who should I contact about a moderation decision?

Contact Mike Cubberly or a community lead privately. Include the original post, message link, and the specific question you want reviewed.
